Dragon Ball is a Japanese media franchise created by Akira Toriyama. The first Dragon Ball series was released in 1984, and later expanded into three series and twenty films. Funimation, which also produced the first Dragon dragon ball z poster movie in Japan, licensed the film rights for the franchise's international release. Toei produced a one-hour television special in 1994, The True Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans. The two specials were broadcast on Fuji TV and included in the second Dragon Box DVD set released in Japan.

Dragon Ball Z has inspired a number of media properties. The series has been adapted into three feature films and twenty television specials. In the United States, Funimation licensed the film rights to Dragon Ball Super and Dragonball Z. In Europe, the films were licensed to V Jump and Weekly Shonen Jump. The Japanese version of the manga was adapted into a two-part video game in 1994. This video game was developed by Funimation.

As of May 2016, the Dragon Ball franchise has inspired twenty anime movies and three television specials. The anime films are produced by Funimation, and are released on home video as a 'Feature' just like a theatrical film. The second Dragon Box DVD set was released in Japan in 2004. It was based on episodes 109 and 110 of the original series. The first and second films are adapted from the manga.

Toei Animation also has animated television specials. The first one, "Dragon Ball Z: The Animation" was originally produced in 1984 by Akira Toriyama. The series is still being produced and distributed worldwide. Toei's North American releases include the four-part Dragon Ball Super TV specials, which aired on Fuji TV on October 8, 2017. It counts as episodes 109 and 110 of the manga.
